Trade cards and bills of lading form the bulk of the collection and several souvenir reprints of Birch’s “View of Philadelphia” also comprise a significant number. Businesses and industries significantly represented include freight shipping, dry goods stores, the pharmaceutical industry, silver and coppersmiths, home furnishing stores, carriage manufactories, and booksellers. Collection also contains a number of early trade cards (pre-1860), including a ca. 1769 trade card for cloth merchant, later Continental Congressman Francis Hopkinson. Other items of note include a collection of pre-1805 property maps of Southwark; a ca. 1830 proof of banknotes printed in German for The Western Bank of Philadelphia; and an early lithographic view of Lower Dublin Academy printed by Childs & Inman in 1830; Graphics include vignettes of modes of transportation; exteriors of storefronts and manufactories; cityscape and marine views; female allegorical, floral, and animal imagery; city landmarks; and ornamented type ER -
