Philadelphia. 1890.Subject(s): Genre/Form: Summary: Drawing showing the exterior of the first building of the Library Company of Philadelphia, the subscription library, organized by Benjamin Franklin and his Junto in 1731, and built 1789-1790 after the designs of Dr. William Thornton. Shows the two-story, Palladian building with a hippped roof surrounded by a balustrade with urns and with a double-sided staircase leading to an entryway. The front façade is adorned with four engaged pillasters below a pediment. Also shows the Benjamin Franklin statue sculpted by Francesco Lazzarini and installed in 1792 in the niche above the building entrance. There is a man in a top hat and a woman with a dog on the street corner in front of the building.
