Dr. William Thornton designed the building, which was constructed on South Fifth Street for the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1789. In 1887, the building was demolished for the erection of the Drexel Building.

Exterior view looking east from State House Square at the red-brick building, showing four prominent pilasters and the statue of Benjamin Franklin in a niche above the entrance door. Dr. William Thornton designed the building, which was constructed on South Fifth Street for the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1789.
