Philadelphia. 1818.Subject(s): Genre/Form: Summary: Exterior view showing the first building of the subscription library, organized by Benjamin Franklin and his Junto in 1731, and built 1789-1790 after the designs of Dr. William Thornton at Fifth and Library streets. Shows the two-story, Palladian building with a hipped roof surrounded by a balustrade with urns and a double-sided staircase leading to an entryway. The front façade is adorned with four engaged pillasters below a pediment marked "Philadelphia Library." Also shows the Benjamin Franklin statue sculpted by Francesco Lazzarini and installed in 1792 in the niche above the building entrance. A street lamp and fire hydrant are visible on the street corner.
