Depicts men reading and in conversation in the Loganian Room. Shelves of books, some behind gates, line the room which also has upper balconies. In the left foreground, books, some folio size, are stacked on a table across from two men, one older and wearing a top hat, who converse and hold their hands out to each other. They stand by a sign reading "All Loud conversation in the Library is Prohibited." The younger man wears a derby and has a handbill in his coat pocket. In the far right, a man sits on a chair with a cushion and reads a book over his lap, while in the center of the room, two men page through a book together at a table on which books are stacked. One man looks toward the viewer. Behind them, two other men are seated and reading books, one with his back to the viewer. View also shows hardback chairs with cushions in the seats and by tables; a library ladder; and art and artifacts from the Library's collections on display in niches, on walls, and above a display case. Art and artifacts include the marble bust "Clytie" (bequest of Dr. James Rush, 1869), Peter Cooper's circa 1718 painting, "The South East Prospect of the City of Philadelphia" (gift of George Mifflin Dallas, 1857), and John Child's 1835 tall case clock (purchased by the Library Company from John Child in 1835).
